Yes, Maine’s license plate says it all in this one compound word.  In fact, Maine has the highest proportion of vacation homes according to the 2010 census.  With its rockbound coast, sapphire lakes and verdant mountains; the Pine Tree State has much to offer.

Other less obvious attributes than its stunning scenery make Maine a desired place for people seeking second homes.  The pleasant days and crisp, cool nights of summer offer a welcome relief from the heat and humidity that most of the nation experiences.

Maine is a comfortable drive from the major metropolitan areas along the East Coast.  It is said that nearly 25% of the nation’s population is a 10 hour or less drive to the easternmost state.

Maine is considered one of the safest states in the union; especially when one considers violent crime.

Many of the vacation homes are found on the nearly 3500 miles of coastline.  When compared to the coast, much of the inland areas are relatively undiscovered.  Large lakes such as Sebago and Rangeley have a traditional following.

Maine’s largest lake, Moosehead, was once a popular destination for city dwellers escaping the heat and associated diseases in the late 1800’s to mid 1900’s.  Much of its 232 miles of shoreline is now protected, yet there is a new lakeside development promising a unique opportunity for land ownership on the “Jewel of Maine’s Northwoods”.
